Throughout this research on Andrew Goodwin theory relationated with music videos I will expand my knowledge according to the codes and conventions of music videos. Goodwin theory on music videos is taken from “Dancing in the distraction factory 1992”.
Theory:
Goodwin believed that the visuals and illustration of a music video should match up with the music and the beat.
Key points of Goodwin Theory:
- There is a relation between the music and the lyrics
- Intertextuality
- Artists Iconography
- All music videos have specific genre characteristics, depending on the genre of music.
Narrative and Mise-en-Scene:
Music videos are advertisements, as well as telling the story of the song. The lyrics of the song are represented with images, the artist acts as both performer and narrator (and sometimes character), making the video feel authentic.
Artists Iconography:
Music videos are primarily used to promote an artist. They are produced by record companies as a way of promoting and increasing the profile and sales of the artists, and as such they must tell a story about the development of the artist. In the Mise-en-Scene of the music videos the artist is quickly recognised as the singer is usually dressed in a way to look unique.
Intertextuality:
Meaning its includes other types of media such as films and other music genders being represented on the music video. This is illustrated to the audience throughout different symbols representing the idea to the viewer.
